Your Role and Responsibilities

In this role, your primary focus will be facilitating interactive workshops with clients. We have a set of standard approaches, but every engagement is customized. When your Client Engineering team is asked to work on a client project, you will participate in determining the right fit between the client, IBM and best approach for workshop.

A Designer in this position incorporates three roles: Facilitator, Consultant, and Designer:

  • As a Facilitator, you will set up logistics and customize the materials. You will be responsible for running the meetings, ensuring the team stays on track, and keeping a high-level view towards a successful outcome.
  • Simultaneously, you’re a Consultant, building a relationship with interdisciplinary IBM and client teams to deliver value to the client and create opportunities for IBM.
  • As a Designer, you’re advocating for the end user’s needs and positive user experiences.

Following a workshop, you may create designs for a Proof of Concept, a demo, or a Minimum Viable Product (MVP). You may also be engaged in information architecture, research, and/or evaluation.

For this position, the design work is concepts and processes – uncovering business value, defining a problem, shaping solutions, and proving them out. What you’re creating will look less like a visual designer’s portfolio and more like a user researcher’s portfolio.

Opportunities are available in: Atlanta GA, Boston MA, Chicago IL, Dallas TX, New York NY, San Francisco CA, and Washington DC – to name a few.

Required Technical and Professional Expertise

  • B.S./M.S. in Design, similar discipline or non-design degree with design bootcamp training.
  • Design portfolio demonstrating a strong understanding of user-centered design principles and practices.
  • Growth mindset and ability to understand complex technical problems.
  • Familiarity with workshopping techniques and ability to facilitate a diverse group to a desired outcome.
  • Strong professional verbal, written, and interpersonal skills.
  • Demonstrated team collaboration and leadership.
  • Readiness to travel up to 50% annually.

Preferred Technical and Professional Expertise

  • At least 1 year experience in user-centered design principles and practices.
  • At least 1 year experience in work shopping and facilitation techniques.
  • Design Thinking or Design Sprint certification or comparable expertise.
  • Demonstrated ability to work in a client facing environment.
  • Experience includes all settings, such as coursework, informal or side projects, internships and work
  • experience, leading to a result or achievement.
